Thank you for the new section! :D

I don't know about "near future", but I certainly intend to have fun!

It's going to need repainting due to all the bits in need of welding, what colour should I do? So far the suggestions have been same colour as it is now, black with flames on the bonnet, yellow with pink flowers, grey or blue?

Also, do people know if the headlights are original? I though the rectangular ones were for later models? oh, and can it run on unleaded? Where do I get the sticky up bits for the bumper?

Sorry, I think I'm going to have to join a 2cv club or something

Thanks!

George

As the Citroen is a French car and has a very unique look I think it fits in with Motobecanes quite nicely AND our host Mabecane put a section up for you so please post lots here about the adventures of this vehicle. Everyone here I am sure has some interest in your new van.
I found a site I dont know how much site searching you have done yet...
http://www.citrobe.org/2cveng.htm
When we redo a bike to non-factory looks then we take some pictures and colour them in to our liking just to see what a different colour scheme would look like, that would probably help you with the colour choice for your new project. Also google some images of them which might give you the perfect scheme.

Hi George!

Do you live in the UK?

There are lots of 2cv specialist shops in the UK and France dealing with parts for the 2cv.
You can actually build a new 2cv, ALL parts are available today.

Search the net and you will find it, or I'll find it and give you the links for them.

I have to look it up, but think 2cv's came with square headlights from -74 onwards.
There were special models like the Charleston and the Dolly, wich came with the old rounded headlights, but in chrome instead of painted as normal.

The color?
Well, you have to make up your mind if it's an all fun and games car, or if it's an investment. (ugly word for a car, but now I've said it) :D
If it's the first, you paint it any color you like, if it's the latter, you have to paint it an original color of the period, and it would be easyer to sell it on at some point.
I personally like the original colors the best, and there are many to chose from, but that's 2cv for you, anything goes!

I think you should paint it white or off-white, and then have a special logo made using your name or a nickname, and have it applied to the sides where the Jolly Jack's current logo is now. Unless you want to be anonymous.

so...off-white van with "Gas Mark 5" printed all over the sides? :P

It is more of an (I-word  ) than a fun and games car, so I think a proper 2cv colour would be best...veering very slightly towards blue, but not sure? I'll shout at photoshop for a bit and see if I can make anything....

I am in the uk, I've found quite a few good sites already, but I still don't think I'm prepared to spend £25 joining 2CVGB :( Are there any other UK 2cvish clubs or something?

Anyway, I'm picking it up on friday - I'll flood you all with questions then

Thanks,

George

Get a dog and paint it red!
(Did anyone say "Postman Pat)? :D

Well, if you get in touch with some REAL 2cv people in the UK, you might not need to be a member to get help.
Look on the net, if there are some Citroen forums in England, that will cost you nothing!

I'm off for holyday now, will be back next thursday, and then off again the following week, but I'll be back to see your posts after that.

I'm going to Trollhættan in Sweden, the birthplace of SAAB. :D

George - I hope you will be posting pictures of the 2CV when it is home. I was going to suggest painting GasMark5's Mobylette Repair Service on the doors but maybe you could get a magnetic sign with the logo to stick on the door panels.
Like Duralinox has suggested - there must be some forums which can help you with the resto and such. I am thinking that even if it is not all the info you need to do a resto, it would probably be a good idea to gather up all you can for free first and then shell out the £25 if you absolutely have to...

" Gas Mark 5's mobylette repair service "
Brilliant!
I've already got the dog, but didn't postman pat have a cat? Oh well, I grew up with the clangers instead :D
And don't worry, I certainly will post pictures!
Any tips on trailering it? We've hired one, presumably drive it onto it, put brakes on and leave it in gear?
We've got some straps as well, are they necessary? should we just put them around the wheels or something? :?
Have a fun in Sweden! My parents went on a cycling holiday there ages ago, cooking on a primus and fitting into a tiny tent, the 'Ultimate' I think it was called - Hight of technology then  30cm high at one end, 70cm at the other, and about a metre wide

P.S. http://www.airventure.de/centenary2003/wright1.jpg , http://www.airventure.de/centenary2003/2cv.jpg recognise that engine? :P

Strapping the wires is the best way to go holding a vehicle to a trailer - keep the straps long so you can get some stretch in the strap or you will be stopping every kilometer to tighten them up.
If you put it in gear put it in first or the compression will not hold the vehicle.

Strap the car very firmly to the trailer!
The handbrake is nothing more than 4 tiny round brake pads, and handbrakes are a weak and often not adjusted correctly, so, don't trust the handbrake please!

Once it has been adjusted correctly it works fine!

Compression?
What compression?
It's a 2cv!!! :D :D
Just kidding.

Oh yes, I recognise the engine!
It's a very longlasting engine, likes a bit of rpm's to keep up speed, just keep a look out for the oil level, that's the only thing that can kill a 2cv engine!

Well, I plan to have fun in Sweden, not so many 2cv's but I'll survive. :D

Here are some things for you to look at:

http://www.ecas2cvparts.co.uk/ 2cv spare parts in the UK.

http://www.citronpaper.it/1Citronpaper/TAKEALOOK.htm Citroen brochures, pics and ads.

I've got it! I have actually, physically got it!

4 1/2 hour drive to pick it up, 5 1/2 to get it back, but worth every second! The people were wonderful and as it was going to someone who would do it up and enjoy driving it rather than a dealer they stuffed it full of spares; two spare front wings, bonnet, front light shells, 2 spare spark plugs, altenator belt, air oil and petrol filter, various side pannels, rear doors, one front door, 4 wheels and tires, good as new, glass, bonnet hinge, lots more that I can't remember!

Had a (very!) quick drive of sorts... that was my third time ever driving a car! I think I've got the gears sorted out now... :?

And it sounds wonderful! - pictures to follow!

Thanks for those sites, It doesn't actually look like I will need many parts now, there are so many spares with it, but the brochures etc, are great!

Thanks all, will post pictures when my camera stops sulking.

George
